This study examines African philosophy as an authentic field of knowledge rooted in the continent's historical and cultural foundations. The study’s central problematic arises from the field's confrontation with the system of Western colonial hegemony—a system that imposed racist philosophical theories aimed at denying the very existence of African philosophy, thereby marginalizing and excluding diverse local cultures and effacing identity. The study traces the historical and intellectual evolution of the African response; this colonial exclusion and marginalization fostered a profound consciousness among Africans regarding the tension between their own identities and the imported Western colonial paradigm. Consequently, a critical, emancipatory consciousness matured, led by the continent's philosophers, to deconstruct the Western-centric narrative and resist various forms of hegemony and dependency .
The study concludes that this intellectual activity did not stop at mere reaction; rather, it sought comprehensive liberation by forging a distinct and independent philosophical thought rooted in local culture, reconstructing the African self, and combating the negative effects of colonialism—in all their intellectual and material forms—on African societies.
